Project History

Mitch Kitter and Shalem Mathew started the Love is Love project in 2012 photographing 28 LGBT couples from the Anchorage Alaska. With the success of the project in Alaska the pair are taking the project on the road and photographing couples across America. Wanted: LGBT Couples

We’re looking for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender couples and families to photograph for the Love is Love Project. If you are interested in being photographed for the project, please fill out the Couple Submission Survey below.

Advocate: Although Alaska is unlike anywhere else in the country, love there looks like it does just about any place. But what photographers Mitch Kitter and Shalem Mathew really set out to prove with the launch of the “Love Is Love” project in the summer of 2012 is even simpler — that love is love, no matter if you are straight or LGBT.

Alaska Dispatch: Photographers and studio owners Shalem Mathew and Mitch Kitter, partners themselves, decided they would document same-sex couples to help people understand that love is the same for everyone. They put out a call on Facebook for same-sex couples who wanted their portraits taken, and the response was tremendous.

Daily News: What started as a localized exertion by “Like is Appreciate: Alaska,” the challenge will extend via several states that have not still legalized marriage equality, this kind of as Utah and Texas, in an work to showcase the appreciate of LGBT partners in these spots via a photo book.

Freedom to Marry: More than two years ago, a young woman was having head shots taken at Treft.Punkt, a photography studio in Anchorage, Alaska. During her shoot, she asked the photographer, Shalem Mathew, about his wedding engagement shoots. “Do you photograph all kinds of people?” She asked.
